See It, Name It, Act on It: A Framework for Effective Feedback

This is a 2.5hr Deep Dive Workshop

Effective feedback is a critical component of a high-performing school. It provides a mechanism for assessing an educator’s performance, a guide for promoting the development of educators trying to master a new task or competency, fodder for self-reflection, and a potential incentive to improve impact on student learning. The key word here, though, is effective (Prayson & Rowe).

If leaders expect the feedback they give to translate to improved results, they need to practice delivering it in such a way that others are willing to receive it and act on it. This workshop will teach participants a proven model that can be used in formal supervisor-supervisee conversations or in a range of coaching models that target improving student learning. Leaders at all levels of an organization will find this framework useful. During this session, participants will:

  • Build capability in observing a lesson or action (e.g., facilitating a meeting, delivering a presentation) and providing direct feedback (see it, name it)
  • Build capability in supporting the application of the feedback (act on  it)
  • Develop a shared understanding of the spectrum of coaching approaches from direct to cognitive coaching (and when to use which approach)

Please note that there are two sessions by Dr. Sparrow focused on feedback. These sessions can be taken consecutively or independently.
