Translanguaging and Culturally Responsive Practices: Building Inclusive Multilingual School Communities

In this immersive, full-day session, international school leaders will embark on a transformative journey exploring the symbiotic relationship between translanguaging and culturally responsive practices. Through engaging activities, reflective discussions, and research-based insights, participants will uncover how these powerful pedagogies intertwine to create the bedrock for linguistic equity and inclusivity in diverse school communities.

By diving deep into the practical applications of translanguaging and culturally responsive leadership, school leaders will gain the tools and confidence needed to advocate for and implement these approaches in their unique contexts. A special Lego Serious Play element will provide an innovative, hands-on opportunity for participants to explore their own cultural identities and better understand the lived experiences of the multilingual and multicultural students, families, and educators they serve.

By the end of the session, participants will:

  • Articulate the key principles of translanguaging and culturally responsive practices, and explain how these pedagogies interconnect to support inclusive multilingual school communities.

  • Implement practical translanguaging strategies in various school contexts, such as classrooms, parent meetings, and school events, to empower and validate the experiences of bilingual and multilingual students, teachers, parents, and community members.

  • Apply culturally responsive leadership practices to create school environments that honor and celebrate the diverse identities, experiences, and ways of knowing of all community members.

  • Develop a personalized action plan for embedding translanguaging and culturally responsive practices into their school’s culture and curriculum, and feel confident in their ability to lead this transformative change.

  • Connect with a network of like-minded international school leaders committed to advancing linguistic equity and inclusivity in their communities, and continue the learning journey beyond the session.

This session is tailored for international school leaders, including principals, heads of school, and curriculum leaders, particularly those serving in schools across Asia and Southeast Asia where the predominant school population is multilingual and multicultural. Participants will leave with a robust toolkit and renewed inspiration to cultivate school communities where every voice is valued, and every learner thrives.
