Why Leadership Feels Harder Than It Should (And Three Protocols to Fix It)
This is a 2.5hr Deep Dive Workshop
Why do capable, experienced educators suddenly feel like beginners when they step into leadership? The answer isn’t a lack of skill or knowledge. It’s cognitive overload. When the basics of leadership aren’t automatic, they consume all available mental bandwidth, leaving nothing for the strategic thinking, creativity, and human connection that great leadership requires.
In this session, Shane Leaning walks through the research behind cognitive load in leadership, including findings from cognitive load theory, skill transfer studies, and implementation science. He then teaches three practical, evidence-based protocols for communication clarity, meeting effectiveness, and feedback conversations. Participants practise each one in the room with a partner and leave with a clear understanding of why small systematic changes can free up the cognitive space to lead authentically.
